Scope and Contents note

The collection includes Robert B. Johnston's research material (documents, images and maps) related to the activities of California rancher and businessman Jesse Douglas Carr (1814-1903), especially those associated with Carr's ranching activities in the California-Oregon border area, as well as Johnston's correspondence, article manuscript drafts and presentations related to his research on Jesse D. Carr and pioneer Jesse Applegate.

Biographical / Historical

Robert B. (Burney) Johnston, educator and historian, is recognized for his research and publications on Jesse D. Carr and Salinas, California. He was born in Ottawa Kansas on August 30, 1906, lived in Minnesota from 1914-1923, and moved to California that year and lived there until his death on August 10, 1997. Johnston received his B.A. degree from University of Redlands in 1928 and an M.A. in U.S. History and Political Science in 1930 from Claremont Colleges. He completed additional graduate work at the University of Chicago, Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley. Johnston taught American history and government in California secondary schools from 1929 to 1950. From 1950-1971 he taught American history, political science and California history at Hartnell Community College, Salinas California. He researched and published several books on Salinas and Monterey County, California as well as his article on Jesse D. Carr.
