“Harper's Weekly, Journal of Civilization” was an American political magazine based in New York City. Published by Harper & Brothers from 1857 until 1916, it featured foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays, and illustrations. During the Modoc War (1872-1873) the magazine published articles and engravings from photographs to give the general public a view of the war. The full page illustration “The Modocs - Murder of General Canby” was done by artist William Simpson (1823-1899). Date of the issue: 1873-06-28.
