Biographical / Historical
The Oregon-California railroad was formed from the Oregon Central Railroad in 1869. Over time, the railroad qualified for land grants and grew southward into California. In 1887, the railroad was completed over Siskiyou Summit, and Southern Pacific Railroad assumed control. Throughout its construction, the land surrounding the railroads was sold to encourage settlement and growth. This resulted in growth and new townsites, particularly in the Willamette and Umpqua Valleys.
