Biographical / Historical
Gilchrist: Six Generations in the Forest Industry is a book centered on a private lumber town in northern Klamath County. Privately owned towns were common in the Pacific Northwest out of necessity. Due to the remote locations of lumber operations, there was need for townships and the services they provide. As economic development continued in the region, these company towns began to disappear. Gilchrist was the last lumber company town in Oregon. It was sold to Crown Pacific Partners in 1991, and later to Interfor Pacific in 2006 after Crown Pacific declared bankruptcy. Presently, the town still exists as an unincorporated community.
