Biographical / Historical
The history of railroads in Oregon predates the First Transcontinental Railroad (1863), as rail transportation in Oregon has existed since 1855. The first railway in Oregon was proposed in 1864, while Oregon Portage Railroad, which operated from 1858 to 1896, was the first railroad in Oregon. Several rail routes were proposed or surveyed that would follow the Oregon Trail. Most of the attempted railroad lines in Oregon were surveyed, and even graded, but not completed.
