Biographical / Historical
Steens Mountain, located in southeastern Oregon, was originally called the Snowy Mountains. It is so large that it is often mistaken for a mountain range instead of a single mountain. Due to its size, its effects on the climate have created a large amount of geological and ecological diversity. To protect the mountain and the surrounding lands, the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protective Act was established in 2000, creating the Steens Mountain Wilderness. This wilderness area protects the land from grazing and free cattle.
