Biographical / Historical
The Ewauna Box Company was founded by C.B. Cristler and Charles McGowan in 1912 in Klamath Falls, Oregon. It grew to become one of the largest and most modern box factories on the West Coast. In 1920 the company built a single band sawmill next to the factory at Lake Ewauna and in 1926 this was enlarged to a three band sawmill. In 1922 Ewauna leased its first engine and joined the railroad logging business. One of its new logging camps was the Quartz Mountain camp, which was established after OC&E Railway completed their line from Sprague River to Bly, giving Ewauna a track to connect their mainline to. The logs used at the factory came from various Native American reservations in southern Oregon. The holdings of the Ewauna Box Company were bought in 1948 by the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company.
