Biographical / Historical
In 1980s Pacific Power and Light (PP&L) Company and the city of Klamath Falls proposed to build another dam along the Klamath River, a 120 foot high and 380 foot long Salt Caves Dam. Construction of a dam of this size would have had damaging effect on the flora and fauna of hundreds of acres of wildlife habitat in the Klamath River Canyon. Two bird species would have been further endangered by that construction: the Peregrine Falcon and the Bald Eagle, as their nesting sites could have been destroyed. The surrounding trees, shrubs and a plant, a candidate for an endangered status, would have suffered greatly from construction of the dam, as well as several species of trout. With that in mind, conservationists took action to protect the scenic Klamath River Canyon. Due to the hard work of conservations and concerned citizens, the Salt Caves Dam never left the proposal stage.
