Biographical / Historical

The State of Jefferson is a proposed 51st U.S. state that calls for combining rural areas of Southern Oregon and Northern California. The movement proposed to adopt the name of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, who had sent the Lewis and Clark expedition to the Pacific Northwest. The original proposal in 1941 called for uniting the Oregon counties of Curry, Josephine, Jackson, and Klamath with the California counties of Del Norte, Siskiyou, and Modoc to form this new state. The proposal was caused by the concern that these heavily rural areas were underrepresented in the state government. What traction it had gained vanished after the attacks on Pearl Harbor.
