Content Description

The collection contains bound photocopies of letters related to the Modoc War of 1872-1873 and provides the cultural context of the time period between 1865 and 1877. Many of the letters detail interactions with Captain Jack and Modocs during their rebellion. Also included are letters to and from military personnel with various logistical information related to the conflict.

Biographical / Historical

Don C. (Custer) Fisher was the first Superintendent of the Lava Beds National Monument. He was born in Idaho in 1888, graduated from the University of Idaho with BS and MS degrees. He was a veteran of World War I, spending 22 months overseas. Mr. Fisher was involved in the federal park service for many years, serving as chief ranger at the Colonial National Historic Park at Yorktown, VA, as ranger at Crater Lake National Park and since 1934 as a superintendent of the Lava Beds National Monument. Mr. Fisher was interested in the museum and historical value of Indian artifacts and was largely responsible for the collection at Indian Wells, headquarters in the monument. For 25 years Don Fisher worked on the history of the Modoc War and completed it in 1953. He worked as assistant principal and assistant dean of boys at Klamath Union High School for eight years. Mr. and Mrs. Fisher came to Klamath Falls in 1925. Mr. Fisher was a member of the Klamath Falls Lodge, the Elks and the Rotary club. He died at the age of 65 in 1954.
