Scope and Contents note

The collection consists of documents, photocopies and images related to the Klamath River Commission's activities that eventually created the Klamath River Compact in 1957 and the early activities of the Klamath River Compact Commission. Both organizations addressed land and water use in the Klamath River watershed of Oregon and California. Series I is Collection Description. Series II: Nelson Reed Papers includes correspondence, minutes and other records of the Klamath River Commission from 1951-1958. Series III: Additional Donations contains related materials added to the collection at a later date.

Biographical / Historical

Nelson Reed was a businessman, civic leader and philanthropist in the Klamath Basin of Oregon and California. He was appointed chairman of the Oregon Klamath River Commission, the legislative study group that developed the Klamath River Compact with the California Klamath River Commission in 1957. Nelson Reed was born on June 21, 1895 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and died on November 11, 1970 in Klamath Falls, Oregon. He is also recognized as the chairman of the Examining Board for the opening of Tulelake, California homesteading land in 1947 and 1948 and the author of the books Tales of the Klamath Country, Tule Smoke and Stories of Let’s Pretend.

Nell Kuonen (born November 10, 1928) is a businesswoman, former Klamath County, Oregon Commissioner and philanthropist. She was appointed the Federal Representative on the Klamath River Compact Commission in 1983 and served as chairperson of the group.

Abstract

The collection consists of documents, photocopies and images from the Klamath River Commission addressing land and water use in the Klamath River watershed of Oregon and California. The Commission was instrumental in the creation of the 1957 Klamath River Compact. Nelson Reed was a founding member of the Klamath River Compact Commission. Nell Kuonen was appointed Federal representative and Chairperson of the Commission in 1983.

Immediate Source of Acquisition note

Nelson Reed, a founding member of the Klamath River Compact Commission, gave his Klamath River Compact papers to Laurence L. Shaw upon the closing of Reed's office in Klamath Falls, Oregon. In 1967, Mr. Shaw donated the papers to the Oregon Historical Society. In 1990 Nell Kuonen, chair of the Klamath River Compact Commission and a Shaw Historical Library Board member, arranged with the Oregon Historical Society to create a duplicate collection at the Shaw Historical Library.

Related materials were added to the collection in the early 1990s.

Existence and Location of Originals note

Series II: Nelson Reed Papers consists of photocopies and some original duplicates of the Klamath River Commission records (Mss 1154) held by the Oregon Historical Society, 1200 SW Park Avenue Portland, OR 97205.
