Pelican Butte
Pelican Butte is a dormant shield volcano in the Cascade Range in Southern Oregon. It rises directly above the shore of the Upper Klamath Lake. A steep bowl, carved into the northeast slope of the mountain, makes it a popular spot for skiers and snowmobilers. Unfortunately, the many attempts to establish a ski resort there have been unsuccessful.
Running Y
In 1866 Wendolin Nus became the first settler on the land that is now the Running Y Resort. The rock wall he built stands to this day. Much of the land was later used as a ranch from 1875 to 1890. After a severe winter killed much of the cattle, the ranch was sold. By 1897 much of the area received drainage and irrigation improvements and was used to grow crops such as grasses, which were popular for building golf courses. The land was sold multiple times throughout the following years, including to Walt Disney’s older brother, Roy. Eventually, in 1994, Klamath Falls' JELD-WEN Corporation purchased the ranch. A portion of the land was converted into the Running Y Ranch Resort, while the rest was converted back into the original marshland prior to the Reclamation. Professional golfer Arnold Palmer held the ceremony for the opening of the resort's golf course in 1995. Currently, the resort is owned by Bill & Lynelle Lynch, who purchased it in 2014.
