Collection consists of 5 folders, containing copies of handwritten letters by Frazier Augustus Boutelle, 2nd Lieutenant, First U.S. Cavalry Regiment, dating back to 1869, 1873-1873. Letters contain information on Boutelle's participation in the Modoc War. He fired the first shot during the Battle of the Lost River, November 1872, the first battle of the Modoc War.
