A box with 5 folders, containing copies of handwritten letters by Frazier Augustus Boutelle, 2nd Lieutenant, First U.S. Cavalry Regiment, dating back to 1869, 1873-1873. Letters contain information on Boutelle's participation in the Modoc War. He fired the first shot during the Battle of the Lost River, November 1872, the first battle of the Modoc War.

Biographical / Historical

Frazier Augustus Boutelle was an officer in the U.S. Army, fighting in the Civil War, the Indian Wars and working as a recruiter in World War I. Frazier Boutelle, 2nd Lieutenant, First U.S. Cavalry Regiment, fired the first shot of the Modoc War (1872-1873) during the Lost River Battle in November 1872. He rose to 1st Lieutenant in 1873. In 1889-1891 he worked as a second acting Superintendent of Yellowstone National Park in command of the U.S. Army contingent. His conservationist practices made a significant and lasting impact and are still in use in National Parks today. Boutelle retired from the Army in 1895 and took up a position with the Washington National Guard. He was appointed to head the Guard as Adjutant-General, with the rank of Brigadier General. Frazier Boutelle returned to duty in 1905 as a recruiting officer. He was active at the Seattle office during World War I, the oldest serving officer of his time, and when the office closed in 1919, he retired from military service for the last time. Boutelle died at his home in Seattle in 1924 at the age of 83.
