Biographical / Historical
George Thompson Baldwin was a pioneer settler and businessman in Linkville, Oregon. Born in Missouri in 1855, George Baldwin came to Oregon in 1872 and settled in Ashland. There he learned the tinner’s trade and married Josie N. Nail. In 1875 he came to Linkville (now Klamath Falls) and established his first business, a small tin shop, near the Link River bridge. In 1905 the Baldwin building on Main Street was built to house his hardware dealership. It was the tallest structure in Klamath Falls for many years. He converted it to a hotel in 1911. During his long life in Linkville, George Baldwin served as the County judge and State Senator. He died in Klamath Falls in 1920. Josephine Nail Baldwin was born in Jacksonville in 1855. She died in Klamath Falls in 1929. Their daughter, Maud Baldwin, was a celebrated photographer, whose many photographs are held in the Shaw Library. She took hundreds of photographs preserving the everyday life in the Klamath Basin for posterity.
