Biographical / Historical
Dr. Bernard Daly was an Irish immigrant who came to the U.S. with his parents in 1864. Daly earned multiple degrees before moving to Lakeview, where he practiced medicine for almost thirty years. His contributions to the Lakeview area have left a strong impact on both the town and the surrounding Lake County. Daly helped rebuild the area after a massive fire, assisted with bringing the railroad to the town, and served in the public office as a judge, as well as on the town council and in the state legislature. Daly had been known for actively encouraging young people to attend college, going so far as to secretly pay for their tuition. When he died in Lakeview in 1920, he willed his remaining fortune to go towards an educational fund that would provide scholarships to Lake County residents, known today as the Bernard Daly Educational Fund. This education fund is the oldest continuously operating scholarship of its kind in the U.S. and was considered progressive for its time because it specifically granted scholarships to women as well as men.
