Biographical / Historical

Christopher “Kit” Carson (1809 - 1868) was a well-known frontiersman, mountain man, wilderness guide, Indian agent, and U.S. Army officer. Kit Carson was hired by John C. Frémont in the 1840s as a guide. Their expeditions covered much of California, Oregon, and the Great Basin area. In May of 1846, Carson led an assault on a Klamath village on the shores of the Klamath Lake. The village was destroyed, and at least 14 villagers were killed. This massacre, known as the Klamath Lake massacre, was the result of Frémont’s desire to retaliate against a group of Klamath Indians that had attacked his expedition and killed a few members of his party. This attack by the Indians had been in retaliation for Frémont killing their people on sight as he traveled north along the Sacramento river after committing the Sacramento massacre near present-day Redding, California. While in Washington, D.C., Kit Carson was interviewed by The Washington Union, the newspaper published in that city between 1857 and 1859.
