Copies of Washington Union Interview with Christopher Carson

Abstract
Christopher “Kit” Carson (1809 - 1868) was a well-known frontiersman, mountain man, wilderness guide, Indian agent, and U.S. Army officer. In May of 1846, Carson led an assault on a Klamath village on the shores of Klamath Lake. This became known as the Klamath Lake massacre. Collection contains a folder compiled by Laurence L. Shaw with photostat copies of letters and an interview with Kit Carson on the massacre of members of the Frémont Expedition in 1846.

Abstract
James Cushing Merrill was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on March 26, 1853. From a young age he was interested in natural history. Collection contains copy of the correspondence between Dr. J.C. Merrill, U.S. Army, and two professors, G. Brown Goode and S.F. Baird, on the subject of animal species encountered by Dr. Merrill in the late 1800s during his time in the Fort Klamath, Oregon.

The years 1945-1946 saw several major historical events, both in and out of the Klamath Basin. Collection contains a scrapbook created and donated by Richard H. Dewey through Millie Lewis. The clippings cover the years 1945-1946 and 1951, and are about international and local events (e.g. rodeos in Klamath Basin, parade in Klamath Falls and new school buildings).

Cy Haager was a photographer at East Side Pharmacy (exact location unknown). The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.) is an American fraternal order, originally founded as a social club in 1868 in New York City. The Klamath Falls Order of the Elks was founded in the beginning of the 20th century and is located on Main Street. Collection contains an envelope with 12 black and white photographs, depicting the 1930s and 1940s downtown Klamath Falls.

Fish species Shortnose sucker and Lost River sucker, native to southern Oregon and northern California, are federally listed endangered species. Due to habitat recovery measures, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposes to remove both species from the Endangered Species Act. Collection contains documentation on the proposal.

Doctor Daly of Lakeview Scrapbook

Dr. Bernard Daly was a physician, a judge and a legislative representative in the town of Lakeview, Oregon. He actively encouraged young people to attend college, establishing a fund in his will for worthy Lakeview students to attend the University of Oregon. Collection contains of a scrapbook made out of one article: "He Sent a County to College" by Jack Zimmerman, Beaverton Free-Lance Writer of the Sunday Oregonian newspaper, September 18, 1955.
